We're currently in Zambia, volunteering on behalf of @khalsa_aid to support the Congolese refugees that have been displaced because of the ongoing conflict in their homeland. These are some of the lovely little ones that are attending the schools set up by @planinternational in the Mantampala Refugee Camp. I'm still finding it hard to find the words to express how special it was to perform at the annual Commonwealth Service in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Family and dignitaries from all around the world on Monday.. And to have my husband, father and mother sitting front row meant the absolute world to me.  'The Moment' is a poem about love, compassion and togetherness, and what we can do on an individual basis to help humanity, so for it to connect with so many people around the world is nothing but a blessing.  I'll continue to do everything that I can to use the power of poetry to promote positive social change. Support your local artists - support the arts in making this world a better place.   The service is now available on BBC IPlayer.

We are having an incredible journey around the world and have met the most inspirational people, seen the most incredible sights and are learning so much about the beautiful world around us. As well as sightseeing, touring and writing, we will also be working on humanitarian causes we are passionate about. Whilst in Indonesia, we met the wonderful community at the Yayasan Bhakti Senang Hati. The foundation was founded and is run by people with physical disabilities and is one of the only services of its kind in Indonesia.

I had the honour of performing at the National Army Museum to help share the untold stories and voices #70yearson from the partition of India. The evening took me back to the very reason I started performance poetry and that is to share the narratives that we aren't always told or taught and to do it through an accessible creative art form. It's up to us, our generation, to bring the stories of our minority communities and our ancestors to the light. The highlight of the night was seeing how my poems were able to connect with so many different generations. What a night ✨

Within this one universe, amongst its nine planets, two hundred and four countries, eight hundred and nine islands and seven seas, God blessed me with one man that made me understand true love. So I married him on Sunday 30th July 2017.

‪Honoured to discuss the importance of women's voices at the House of Lords with BILLION WOMEN in celebration of #IWD2017 ‬ ‪ Since the beginning of time, women’s voices have been suppressed across the world. And only now, after generations of protest and struggle have women’s voices started to be heard. But for women of colour, the struggle for a voice has been even more difficult. Women still get ignored. Women still get talked over. Women who speak up are often penalized, labeled pushy, or bossy, or a b*tch. So, it’s up to us as women to help create spaces so that women can share their voice. We need women helping women, and encouraging each others voices. I recognize that I am in a position of privilege in the sense that people now want to listen to my poetry and my voice, and I also recognize that they used to burn women like me and my voice. But even still, I face challenges and boundaries when voicing my thoughts, especially when talking about taboo subjects in our community that people still wish to keep brushed under the carpet.   Those that can have their voices heard have the responsibility to share the stories of those that are still voiceless. I think of our immigrant mothers who didn’t have a voice, I think about the unborn or abandoned daughters, I think about the women in countries where women are still killed for having a voice. I do not believe that we have to shout to be heard. But we do have to find our voices, use them clearly, choose our venues, and construct our messages so we may inspire positive change.

During my trip to Punjab I had a chance to visit the Unique Girls Home in Jalandhar again. It was wonderful spending some time with the girls again and seeing how much they have grown since this picture was taken last year. Many of you have read/heard my piece Queens & Corpses, and sadly, this is the reality of ongoing son preference in South Asian culture that the poem was trying to emphasise. Without a change at grassroot levels and from the top, it's implications will continue to result in skewed sex ratios, female feticide and higher child mortality and abandonment rates for girls. I can not commend Bibi Prakash Kaur and the whole team enough for the work that they do. Not only do they provide a home for these girls, but they also support them throughout their educational lives. http://www.uniquehomejalandhar.com/unique-home.php #60million   #equality   #sonpreference   #savethegirlchild   #GenderPayGap #genderequality   #gender   #india   #femalefeticide   #femaleinfanticide #missinggirls

Behind the Netra in action - working with young people to get them to tap into what they are passionate about! After B.T.N taught them about the ‪#‎globalgoals‬ , poetic writing and performance skills they then taught B.T.N about how they want to change the world.
